My work is autobiographical, and I focus on the intersection of poetry and visual arts. My poetry serves as a jumping off point for a deeper exploration into imagery. The content is based around religious and sexual trauma and its connection to childhood wonder. Materiality is a huge part of my practice, as I have the urge to explore different media and modes of depiction.
My work is in conversation with the bigotry forced upon me as a child. I aim to turn that rhetoric on its head, not only representing but praising identities which are looked down on by the church. I take my inspiration from biblical passages, modern religious discourse, and personal symbolism. Blessed Cig is an example of a piece that is full of personal as well as religious symbolism. The cigarette has become a saint-like figure in my life, though I do not smoke. It has become a martyr to me that I keep coming back to time and time again.
